How do we talk about COVID-19 with kids?

There is no doubt that we are in unprecedented territory with the COVID-19 outbreak. In all this uncertainty, one thing is for sure - we need to provide some stability and structure for our kids.

While no one has the answers to all our questions, I’ve been so impressed with the kid-friendly resources available online. I’ve linked some of my favorites below:

Supporting Individuals with Autism through Uncertain Times: This is the most comprehensive resource guide that I’ve found! While created for individuals with autism, I think many of these strategies can be applied to all kids.

Dealing with COVID-19 - Resources & Visual Supports: I was so impressed with this website - from social stories and videos on COVID-19 to visuals on hand washing, this website has some really great tools for children with and without disabilities.

Easter Seals Coronavirus Social Story: A great social story on coronavirus for kids who respond well to social stories!

Autism Speaks: A few quick tips on how to communicate with your child regarding difficult situations.

Autism Society of North Carolina Social Story: Another social story about the importance of not sharing your germs!

CDC Handwashing Visual Support: Simple, yet to the point! Shows kids the difference between clean and dirty hands!

Child Mind Institute: Wonderful articles and videos from experts on the best approaches to talking with kids about COVID-19!

World Health Organization: A short story about COVID-19 written by the World Health Organization. This is a wonderful book to read with your child! It’s a tool to start the conversation and begin to answer your child’s many questions.

BrainPop: This website offers educational videos on a variety of topics and coronavirus is no exception. In addition to a short video that you can watch with your child, there are related reading and writing materials.

GoNoodle Rainbow Breath: A guided breathing exercise perfect for children.

CNN/Sesame Street Town Hall: Is your kiddo a Sesame Street fan? If so, then this is the perfect video series for your child! Hear from all the Sesame Street characters on staying healthy, washing hands, wearing masks, why we are staying home, and why the world is looking a bit different as it opens up post-quarantine.
